Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into nearby bushland.
