Ayoub El Kaabi's Spectacular Goal Secures The Atlas Lions' Triumph Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opening Match.

The Morocco overcame a jittery start to defeat Comoros in the competition's opening game on Sunday, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the latter period.

This constituted a less than dominant display, however, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the tiny island nation in the FIFA rankings and had to work tirelessly for the points in rainy conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Start and Missed Opportunities

Morocco failed to convert an early penalty and were goalless at the interval even with controlling possession, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

It came when full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before laying it across for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass home.

“The first match is never easy but we came good in the second period,” said manager Walid Regragui.

The Substitute's Piece of Brilliance

Any lingering nerves was subsequently eased by a moment of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes after coming on, the forward connected with a cross with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and ensuring the win.

Earlier in the match, the hosts might have taken ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was given for a foul on Díaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi effort was saved by keeper Yannick Pandor.

Comoros Defiant Stand and Late Opportunity

Comoros stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' greater quality eventually told.

Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor pulled off several further fine saves to keep down the scoreline as the game wore on, although his team created a chance for an equaliser shortly following Díaz's goal, with Saïd shooting straight at keeper Yassine Bounou.

Fitness Concern for Morocco

The three points was partially marred by an apparent injury to Morocco's skipper, Romain Saïss, who was forced off after the first half in tears.

The defender had just returned to the international setup recently following a year’s absence caused by ankle surgery.

The win continues the team's record-breaking run of consecutive victories to 19, surpassing the old record of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
