The 2026 Formula 1 cars are set to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious relative to present-day cars.

Formula 1 has introduced the new language that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The sport is implementing what is considered the largest regulation change in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, necessitating major innovations in the cars' aerodynamics.

During grand prix events, drivers will tactically deploy electrical energy – sometimes even hot laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terminology would improve understanding of the central aspects of the new regulations.

The key objective was to render a set of intricate features of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in favour of descriptive names that succinctly convey the primary purpose of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

The FIA states that drivers will have increased agency to make decisions regarding energy deployment, harvesting, and efficiency.

The new regulations introduce a range of settings that will be visually displayed on television graphics to aid the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the current DRS. It provides a surge of additional ERS power accessible when a driver is close behind the leading car to assist with an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a on-demand battery discharge from the hybrid system that can be utilized during attack or defence. It grants the pilot full engine and battery energy at the activation of a control.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be used with calculation, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Active Aero: Both the car's wings adjust their angles – flattening on the straights for reduced drag and higher speed, and angling down in the bends for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: The system can recharge the energy store with energy harvested under braking, or during throttle lift at the end of straights or in sections where only limited engine output is used.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The next-generation machines will be reduced in size and weight compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Overall downforce is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although teams will inevitably claw this back as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The cars will employ moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to reduce drag and boost top speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Tyres will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the petrol engine and the electrical system, up from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The ERS setup is simplified through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey component that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from biomass or lab-created processes.
